Phnom Penh (Capital City)
Phnom Penh is the bustling and vibrant capital of Cambodia. It is situated at the confluence of three rivers: the mighty Mekong, the Bassac, and the great Tonle Sap. Once considered the ‘Gem’ of Indochina, the city still maintains considerable charm with its French colonial mansions, tree-lined boulevards, and monumental Angkorian architecture. Unlike other modern Asian capitals, Phnom Penh exudes a provincial charm and tranquillity. Visitors to the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia can expect a mixture of Asian exotica and famous Cambodian hospitality.
The capital offers many interesting tourist sites. In addition to the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, and Wat Phnom, there are several marketplaces selling carvings, paintings, silk, silver, gems, and even antiques. Phnom Penh is the ideal destination for a leisurely day tour.
The city gets its name from the renowned Wat Phnom Daun Penh, now known as Wat Phnom or Hill Temple. Built in 1373, this temple was constructed to house five statues of Buddha on a man-made hill that stands 27 meters high. According to the legend, these five statues were found floating down the Mekong in a Koki tree. A wealthy widow named Daun Penh, also known as Grandma Penh, saved them and set them up on this hill for worship. Phnom Penh was previously known as Krong Chaktomuk (Chaturmukha), which means “City of Four Faces”. This name refers to the confluence where the Mekong, Bassac, and Tonle Sap rivers cross, forming an “X” where the capital is situated.
Phnom Penh serves as the gateway to an exotic land – the world heritage site, the temples of Angkor in the west, the beaches of the southern coast, and the ethnic minorities of the northeastern provinces. The city offers a wide variety of services, including five-star hotels, budget guest houses, fine international dining, sidewalk noodle shops, neighborhood pubs, international discos, and more.
Like other tourist destinations in Asian cities, Phnom Penh is undergoing rapid change. In recent years, the number of restaurants and hotels has grown considerably, and there has been a significant increase in the number of visitors. Come and witness the original charm of Phnom Penh before it transforms in the years to come.
