Religion
Theravada Buddhism is the oldest surviving form and it is a prevailing official religion in Cambodia; approximately ninety percent of the population are Buddhists. Since Buddha statues and images represent the revered Buddha, visitors are asked to treat all such statues and images with respect so as not to cause offence to local people. In Cambodia, regardless of religion, the country maintains a harmonised state. Despite Buddhism being the official religion, Cambodia fosters a harmonious environment where various faiths coexist peacefully. Besides Buddhist temples, there are many mosques and churches in the country as well, reflecting the presence of Islam, Hinduism, Christianity. Tribal Animism, an indigenous belief system, is also practiced by some communities within Cambodia.
