Kandal
Kandal is a smaller province in Cambodia that completely surrounds, but does not include, the capital city of Phnom Penh. The provincial capital, Ta Khmau, is located about 20km south of Phnom Penh. Kandal is known for its rich ancient history, with one of its main attractions being Udong. Udong was the former capital of Cambodia between 1618 and 1866 and was the site of coronations for several kings, including King Norodom.
There are several noteworthy sights to see in Kandal. Recently renewed stupas, a large 8m high reclining Buddha, and the historic Ta San Mosque on the smaller ridge are among them. Kandal province is easily accessible for a day trip from Phnom Penh due to its proximity. Other places of interest include Ang Kor Chey Pagoda, which is located in Ban Tey Dek commune, Kean Svay District. It is approximately 29km from Phnom Penh or 32.6km from Ta Khmao, accessible via National Road N0 1 (Phnom Penh Svay Rieng province). To reach the pagoda, you need to travel along National Road N0 1 from either Phnom Penh or Ta Khmao until you reach Kilometre 29, then continue for about 50 meters. On the right side, there is a gate with a handwritten sign that reads “Ang Kor Chey Pagoda.”
If you enter via the trail, you will arrive at the entertainment center about 1,600m ahead. The pagoda has five peaks, resembling the peaks of a temple. Before reaching the pagoda, you must cross a 100-meter wooden bridge. Underneath the bridge, there is a large pond used for storing water during the dry season. Behind the pagoda, there is an artificial site located on the black hill, which is believed to have been a former palace. Ancient objects and equipment, such as bowls and pots with ancient features, have been discovered there. The black hill is now supervised and maintained by guards due to its association with sacred objects. Angkor Chey pagoda attracts many local visitors, especially those with spiritual beliefs, who come to receive blessings. Additionally, the pagoda is surrounded by beautiful scenery, providing cool shade from the trees and a pleasant environment.
